Thermographic Inspection at the Triennale Milano

May 22, 2024
Triennale Milano Triennale Milano

The diagnostic campaign conducted on the external elevations of the porch facing the park was aimed at detecting the presence of water within the roofing horizon of the porch itself.

A thermographic campaign was also carried out at the technical room on the second basement floor aimed at detecting the presence of water within the masonry.

The areas under investigation were:

  • The soffit of the porch roof on the park floor
  • The masonry of the technical room on the second basement floor.

The investigation was carried out in passive mode (with the masonry in thermal equilibrium).

Passive thermography was performed with the objective of determining the presence of water in the masonry. The elevations were analyzed taking extreme care that there were no irradiated portions of the masonry.

M1 M1

The survey was repeated following a dry period and no areas of active seepage were identified at the time of testing at the porch ceiling.

M2 M2

A beat was also carried out at the technical room on the second basement floor where the presence of water presumably due to capillary rise was detected.

M3 M3

The work was performed by Arch. Guido Roche, an expert in design, restoration, and diagnostics of the built environment and author of the book La termografia per l’edilizia e l’industria (Maggioli Editore).

For this inspection, he used a Hikmicro SP60 thermal imaging camera with a 50° wide-angle lens, chosen primarily for its thermal performance provided by the 640x480 pixel sensor with high thermal resolution capable of discriminating a temperature variation of only 0.03°C (NETD 30mK) at room temperature.

Practicality of use in the field is ensured by the large removable and swiveling display and the 180° rotatable optics. In outdoor inspections under strong sunlight, the eyepiece with OLED display (1024x768 pixels) is very practical.
