How to Check Household Electrical Equipment for Unusual Heat

Oct 8, 2026

Observe accessible electrical surfaces during normal use, compare heat patterns and act on unusual findings.

Heat is part of how electrical equipment operates. Thermal imaging helps you see its distribution across accessible surfaces, adding useful information to the checks you already make for damage, discoloration or unusual smells.

For homeowners, the practical workflow is external observation, fair comparison and a clear record for an electrician if something deserves attention.

Step 1 Observe normal use

From a safe position, scan accessible plug bodies, socket faces, power strips and appliance housings during ordinary operation. Keep covers closed. Do not touch a suspect fitting, expose wiring or add load to make an image more dramatic.

Record what is running and for how long. Operating conditions explain why an image taken today may differ from one taken at another time.

Step 2 Compare like with like

Look for concentrated heat or a noticeable change compared with the same equipment under similar use. Where appropriate, compare similar components under similar loads. A heavily loaded device and an idle device are not equivalent references.

SuperIR enhances thermal image detail, helping you relate the apparent hot area to the equipment outline. Use the temperature scale as well as the colors. Shiny metal can reflect surrounding heat, so focus on accessible surfaces you can interpret reliably and include a normal photo to show the construction and location.

Step 3 Record a concern clearly

A useful report describes both the pattern and the circumstances: “This part of the plug appeared warmer than the rest while this appliance was running.” The thermal image helps locate the observation, while the normal photo identifies the equipment.

If there is pronounced abnormal heat, burning odor, crackling, discoloration or damage, stop using the affected equipment when safe and contact a qualified electrician. Do not delay action to collect a repeat image. A normal-looking exterior scan does not establish the condition of concealed wiring or certify safety.

Step 4 Follow up appropriately

After the electrician has completed the necessary checks and any repair, an external scan during normal, comparable operation can add to your maintenance record. The electrician’s tests establish electrical safety; the thermal record helps you understand how accessible surfaces behave over time.
