Follow temperature patterns around indoor joints and find where a draft deserves a closer check.
You feel a draft, but the gap is hard to find. It may be around a window frame, beneath a door or at a junction between the wall and floor.
Air moving through an opening can cool or warm nearby surfaces. Thermal imaging makes that effect visible under suitable conditions, giving you a way to follow the pattern back toward a possible entry point.
Step 1 Give the pattern a chance to appear
Choose a time when indoors and outdoors have a sustained temperature difference; around 10°C is a useful practical screening target for many homes. Close exterior windows and doors and let indoor conditions stabilize.
Pressure conditions also matter. A leak may show more clearly at one time than another. For a thorough assessment, a professional blower-door test can provide a controlled pressure difference while thermal imaging helps locate the affected surfaces.
Step 2 Scan the usual entry points
From inside, move slowly around window perimeters, door seals, skirting boards, attic hatches and accessible service penetrations. Compare adjacent areas of similar material. In cold weather, a narrow cool streak extending inward from a joint can draw attention to a possible draft; in hot weather, the pattern may appear warmer.
With SuperIR enabled, enhanced image detail helps you relate the temperature pattern to the frame, seal or joint in view. Save an overview and a closer image of the same location. These help you connect the temperature pattern with the actual frame, seal or joint.
Step 3 Check the suspected path
Inspect the window closure, weatherstripping or visible gap identified by the scan. Confirm air movement with an appropriate airflow check or professional assessment before choosing the repair. A cold edge can also arise from a thermal bridge or insulation difference, so use the thermal pattern to direct the check.
Step 4 Improve and compare
Apply suitable weatherstripping or sealing to a confirmed, appropriate location, following product guidance. Keep designed ventilation and combustion-air openings clear; broader air-sealing work should account for indoor air quality and appliance safety.
Then rescan under comparable conditions. Looking at the same joint before and after helps you see whether the surface pattern associated with the draft has changed.
