In a world where hunting is a prerogative of older and male hunters, Carlotta Manzotti breaks the rules: a hunter who has a big passion since when she was young.

"I remember the first time I went hunting, I was 10 years old and it was more than a week I was asking my father to let me go hunting with him." That experience was the starting point of a passion that accompanied Carlotta throughout her life.

She remembers well the first time she went hunting with his father: it was a wild boar driven hunting during the hunting season:" I was not clearly understanding what the other hunters of the team were saying through the radio." But since that moment, she started slowly getting into the slang of the driven hunt.

Who is Carlotta

Carlotta Manzotti is an Italian hunter, aged 25, that hunts wild boar during the hunting season and practices selective hunting during the rest of the year: her field of hunting is Central Italy, 120km north of Rome.

The territory here is tough: badlands and bushes are excellent shelters for wild boars. Hunting wild boar here is a hard practice, both during the hunting season and in selective hunting.

Driven and selective hunting need different perks: precision, endurance, and teamwork are good skills when she is hunting with her dogs, but patience, knowledge of the environment, and a good strategy are needed when you are alone on the field. "I love all kinds of hunting, but driven hunting is something like the first love of your life, it can't be easily forgotten."

Wild Boar Driven Hunting

During the wild boar hunting season, which starts in November, Carlotta's team goes hunting only on Saturday and Sunday. Usually, the hunting time is from 9 AM to 1 PM, but the moments before the start of the hunt are not wasted: they are useful to manage the hunters' positions and to create an efficient action plan. "Hunting in the badlands is never that easy," Says Carlotta,"We have to carefully position the hunters around the valley of the gullies to have a clear view and a safe shot.”

Her father is the hunting team leader and the person who teaches her everything she knows about hunting. They can read the land like the palm of their hands: they have to take the right decision on how to cover all the territory and how to efficiently position the hunters across the hunting field. In the days before the hunt they search for traces and observe the animals' movements.
The planning part is crucial for the result of the hunting day: they could decide to divide the hunting field and cover the areas on different days, or to stretch the driven hunt along the area. "This decision could affect the results of the entire day!" that's why it's important to predict animals' behavior.

It's about having full knowledge regarding both territory and animals' habits: "Studying animals' behavior during the hunting season is never enough to have a full understanding of how they are distributed and use the territory, that's why this is an activity that lasts all year round."
